Golf legend Jack Nicklaus has explained how stem cell therapy has meant he can return to the game he loves after suffering debilitating back pain for many years.
Predating his golfing career, Nicklaus’ back problems meant that he was even starting to find standing challenging. “I could not hit a golf ball without hurting. I could not stand up for more than 10 minutes,” he told the Unite to Cure conference on 27 April in Vatican City.
A chance meeting with a German doctor that was pioneering stem cell treatments for arthritis and joint pain at his Munich clinics changed everything. After undergoing treatment in March 2016 with Dr Eckhard Alt, he can now play golf pain free.
Fat tissue is removed from the stomach or buttocks typically and then processed in a centrifuge to produce a concentrated solution of fat-derived stem cells. These are then injected into the source of pain and the therapy alleviates inflammation. It’s also thought stem cell therapy can repair damaged tissue but more tests are being carried out.
